Ever been on a tandem bike? You know, one of them that has two seats, two handle bars, two sets of peddles but only the guy up front has total control of where you go. I got on one of them once when I was younger. I really didn’t like it. But I soon found out that when your setting in the back, you cant lean to much to the left our right or you will tip the bike. Like I said, I really didn’t like it. I guess I like to have control over where I go and what I do. Then I started thinking about the ride of my life with Christ. How that I, like most of you, like to be in control and go and do what I want, but I also remember how, that day a little over two years ago, I gave Christ my life. And now if I could I would like to share with you a little creative story I feel God has given me. Hope you like it.
Remember when you first gave your heart to Christ? How you told Him that He could have the leading position of your tandem bike? And how that at first it was a great thing. Life was just so grand and great. It was like you was just riding right along, singing "O how I love Jesus", and it was so wonderful. But all of a sudden the great flat road you was traveling came to its first big hill. You had hit some bumps along the way but nothing like this. Your on the back of your tandem bike like you promised you would be, with Christ driving. Your trying to pedal along, and the thought hits you, and you ask “did we have to come this way? I mean, lets at least get off and walk this up and rest for awhile!” And then you hear the loving voice of your driver speak just two small simple words.. “trust me.” So you regain your strength and put all your muscle into it, and finally you make it to the top. Back to the flat land now, you see ahead where the road splits. One leads to a beautiful highway, with lots of space and room to move how you want. The other, just a little rough path. “I know my loving driver will take the nice road” you say under your breath. “He wont make me give up anymore comfort and joy and take that little path I know!” As you come upon the roads you see two signs. One has a arrow that points to the big beautiful road that reads “EASY WAY” and the other just a small simple wood sign that reads “the path of holiness.” Then you see your driver brace himself, and you suddenly realize, we are going to take the little path. You speak up clearly and firm so you know that He can hear, and ask “what are you doing?!?! This is a rough way! Why cant we take the easy way? Its such a better road.” And you once again hear the soft tone of your drivers voice say.. “trust me.” So slightly upset you hit the rough path to holiness. Dodging branches and hitting every rough bump in the road it seems, you try to peddle and keep on moving forward. But after just a short time you look ahead and see that the path your on leads right into a raging river. You look on the other side and see where the path starts again, but you think to yourself, “there is no way!!” But your driver never hit’s the break, never slows down, and drives you right into the raging water. In the middle you say very sternly “I cant believe this!! Are you trying to kill me? The path was rough enough!!” as you stop pedaling you hear once more the calm loving voice of your driver say the same two small words.. “Trust me.” When you come out on the other side, your not pedaling but just holding to the handle bars. You then look ahead and see that there is a big city to your left. You see lots of lights and hear lots of noise. Then you see some people you know from your old Sunday school class. They at one time was on there tandem bike with Christ, but now you see them running around and you see a pile of bikes laying in the middle of the big beautiful road. And you think “how nice it must be! Their so free to do what they want. Not strapped to this bike like me.” Then you look closer and see that they are all in great danger and are getting ready to die. And the noise you hear is screams of panic. And the freedom they have is just a big cage called flesh. Then you suddenly realize, these people are the “Carnal Christians” that slowly traded drivers and took easy way. And you then hear the brokenness in the rich voice of your loving driver as He says… “trust me?”
Isa. 26:4 Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength.
