Song of Solomon 1:4, Draw me, we will run after thee: the king hath brought me into his chambers: we will be glad and rejoice in thee, we will remember thy love more than wine: the upright love thee.
In the Song of Solomon, chapter 1 verse 4, we read a great love story. It takes place between a King, a Shulamite Bride, and the daughters of Jerusalem. This verse given could be very hard to interpret. But with the help of God, I am going to try to explain this a little better. This is just some simple truths that I stumbled upon while reading this verse in study earlier this year. The first thing we must understand is who these characters truly represent. They have a double purpose for us. The king, who was King Solomon in the song, is a representation of Christ Jesus. Who is the King Of All Kings, and Lord of All Lords!! Studying out the definition of the Shulamite, you find that it means “peaceable; perfect; that recompenses.” And the daughters of Jerusalem is simply the body of believers as a whole. So in other words, put yourself spiritually as the Shulamite Bride, speaking to Christ your King, along with all those who are born again believers making up the whole church body as the daughters of Jerusalem.
Now the first thing I got to thinking was this, “why is this girl classified as a Shulamite?! What makes her so much better?” You see, the Shulamite was not a beautiful vessel to most. She was worn from the hard work of life, that came before she met the King. She was no doubt broken, and oftentimes was weary. Filled with exhaustion from the task master of this world (Satan). But then one day… the King came her way. He loved her, and brought her into a place that she had never known before. He set her free, she no longer had to slave in the field of sin, for she had met the King. So as I studied and prayed about why this girl was chosen and called a Shulamite, the only thing I can say is, she was not perfect, nor living in peace, until… she met the King. Something had to be given for her before she could be a true Shulamite. No look at yourself as the Shulamite. Remember when that day came for you? It was a little over two thousand years ago, on a cross. When our King paid the greatest price ever known. It’s only through that precious blood of Christ our King… that we can be considered a true Shulamite. The bride of Christ!
Now we must understand that in this verse there is two different people speaking. One the Shulamite. And two, the daughters of Jerusalem. But they are both speaking to the same King.
First the Shulamite speaks… draw me. This is a prayer that we should tell our loving King daily. “Jesus… draw me closer to you! Let your Holy Ghost and Grace bring me closer to you. I don’t care what I must leave behind! Just draw me to you Jesus!” The reason the Shulamite made such a cry, is simply because she understood that being close to her wonderful King and Savior, was the key to total fullness of Joy. The closer she got to Him, she became even more whole and satisfied. But yet… she desired more of Him. Just to spend one more second in His presence. She would cry… “draw me sweet King!! I desire to just be near you!”
The next thing we hear is “we will run after thee:” This is the daughters of Jerusalem (or the born again body of believers called the Church). They are simply saying “no matter where you go! No matter if you take us through hard times! Through valleys and trials… we will follow you O King!” This is the true cry of the church… were you lead me… I will follow.
Then these words come from the Shulamite “the King hath brought me into His chambers:” She is now simply saying “I asked!!! And I received!! I said draw me!! For I desire to be near you King! And He heard me. And brought me into a secret place, where I may freely have fellowship with Him. To converse and enjoy His greatness!! To have intimate communion with Him!” Every time we ask out of a pure heart to be closer to the Lord, He will draw us. He desires to have this fellowship with us! Even more than we. But we must first crave His presence! And say “draw me dear King!!!”
The last words of verse four is “we will be glad and rejoice in thee, we will remember thy love more than wine: the upright love thee.” This is the daughters of Jerusalem speaking again to their King. They are in short saying, “we will always be glad and have true joy in you King!! We wont trade your love for anything of this world! When times get hard, and trials get tough, we will remember your love! We wont even take into consideration the flesh that we was once entangled in. For all that have taken you as King, and became born again… they love you! For you have did in them, what they could never do for themselves… made them righteous.” This also is the true cry of the church. “It is all about you Jesus!! We will never forget your love that you showed so greatly on that cross!!”
Beloved, let this be our cry! “Draw me Lord Jesus!! My Great King! For I want to be near you! I will run after you! Wherever you lead, I will follow! Just to be near you! I desire that place of fellowship!”
We can move deeper, beloved. But it all starts with one thing… draw me!!
