Psalm 3:5, “I laid me down and slept; I awaked; for the LORD sustained me.”
This is a wonderful verse of scripture, written from the heart of King David. In this time of his life, he was on the run from his son. He had only a few with him, and as he would run here and there, trying to stay one step in front of his enemy, he would look around and see the overwhelming odds. He had with him, only a few loyal friends, and some still yet committed fighters, while his enemy had thousands on their side. King David spent a lot of time trying to hide. Just searching for a safe place to sleep each night. Then one morning, these words was his prayer. He is making a simple declaration of praise, in other words saying, “Lord, I laid down last night, just trusting you to keep me safe through the night. And this morning, you woke me up. You, O Lord, sustained my breath through the night. You kept me safe from my enemy, even though he would have loved to destroy me, you have, one more night, sustained me. Thank you for sustaining me!”
As I read this prayer of David, I feel I should also awake, and with each new day, offer my Lord a similar morning prayer. One of just simply saying, “thank you Lord, for once more keeping me safe from my enemy, for saving my soul from his hands! Thank you for letting me sleep in your presence, and thank you even more, for sustaining me, and bringing me to a new day to praise you.”
Christian, I think it pleases the Lord very well when we offer prayer to Him each morning. So make it a habit to be as David, and start the day correct, with a morning prayer.
